Description

UEFA Euro 1980, held in Italy, was especially important because it was the first European Championship to feature 8 national teams instead of just 4. The tournament was won by West Germany, who beat Belgium 2–1 in the final, with Horst Hrubesch scoring both goals, including the late winner.Euro 1980 is also remembered because Belgium were the surprise team of the tournament, reaching the final with highly organized and disciplined football. Another interesting detail is that this was the last EURO without a traditional semi-final, as the group winners advanced directly to the final. Although the tournament was not famous for high-scoring matches or attacking flair, it was historically significant because it marked the beginning of a new era in the expansion and development of the European Championship.
